Frequently asked questions

What is Post Graduate Professional Development?

This is a way of engaging in continuing professional development which offers teachers an opportunity to work towards a higher qualification.  Post Graduate Professional Development is supported by all the East Midlands Local Authorities and the Teacher Development Agency.

What qualifications can Post Graduate Professional Development lead to?

Universities organise PPD study programmes into modules. These modules usually earn 30 credits and some earn 60 credits.  Accreditation is awarded on completion of the following credits.

60 credits Post Graduate Certificate

120 credits Post Graduate Diploma

180 credits includes a compulsory research methods module and dissertation – Masters degree

Who delivers the Post Graduate Programmes?

Some schools like to work with a University professional whilst others have teachers who have become associate tutors and professional development is delivered by their fellow school colleagues.

Where does it take place?

Traditionally Post Graduate Study involved teachers attending a University on a part time basis.  Whilst this model is still available in most universities it is now more common to find PPD activities centred in schools.

Can prior learning be recognised and accredited?

Exemptions and credits can be gained through the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning  (APEL).  Further information about gaining credits in this way is available from the individual Universities in the East midlands.

How much does it cost?

PPD is a highly cost effective professional development.  The Training and Development Agency (TDA) promotes PPD and subsidises each 60 credit module by £800.  The exact cost is dependent on who is delivering the course and the University that is accrediting the module.  Cost varies from £100 to over £750 for each 60 credits.

What do I do now?
